San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) is the seventh largest school district in California, educating more than 57,000 students every year. The district's mission is to provide each student with an equal opportunity to succeed by promoting intellectual growth, creativity, self-discipline, cultural sensitivity, democratic responsibility, economic competence, and health so that each student can achieve his or her maximum potential.
SFUSD works so that every student who enrolls in its schools will graduate from high school ready for college and careers and equipped with the skills, capacities, and dispositions necessary for 21st-century success. With a strong vision for the future, SFUSD is making strong gains in student achievement: the district saw a 10% increase in English language arts proficiency between 2008-2013. Its graduation rate has reached 82%.
Our Impact
Thirty-seven Education Pioneers have made a difference for SFUSD since 2006, working across departments to advance critical work. Our leaders have:
- Analyzed teacher retention data to identify factors that influence how long teachers stay in the district; set priorities for SFUSD’s teacher retention strategy.
- Designed school and area-level management dashboards that provided quick snapshots into school performance, which allowed assistant superintendents to better monitor principals and schools.
- Crafted a strategy for the Early Education Department to improve and expand their services while also reducing costs, which resulted in better overall impact and fiscal decision making.
- Developed a new district-school communication plan that organized and streamlined information and helped school principals improve their district compliance and school operations.
- And more.
