Since 1988, City Year has united young people of all backgrounds for a year of full-time service to give them the skills and opportunities they need to change the world. The organization’s corps members work as tutors, teachers, mentors, and administrators to help every child reach his or her potential in the classroom and beyond.
With over 19,000 current and former corps members, City Year is well-established across the country. Using a holistic approach called “Whole School Whole Child” to create a positive learning environment for students, City Year focuses on improving outcomes in low-income communities. The organization has demonstrated the strong and sustainable impact it can have on student outcomes, including attendance, behavior, and course performance.
Since 2005, 22 Fellows have made tremendous impact for City Year across the country. Our leaders have:
- Researched best practices and assessed resources to create a pre-opening plan for City Year's first-ever public charter school, opening in Denver in Fall 2015.
- Developed a curriculum toolkit focused on Civic Knowledge, one of City Year’s core competencies for corps member leadership training, to provide corps members with the necessary skills for success in the classroom.
- Produced a long-term government relation strategy that leverages local government grants to grow City Year funding and establishes the financial backing to support student achievement in City Year classrooms in Los Angeles.
- Determined accessibility of student-level data in all City Year schools and districts nationwide, making a plan to leverage these metrics as a regular feedback source throughout the organization to ensure that City Year’s focus remains on student impact.
- And more.
