Alumnus Anthony Johnson, Associate Principal of Merced High School in California, has helped the school gain 68 API points in the last three years, making it one of the highest performing schools in California.

More than 70% of Merced High School's students are considered socioeconomically disadvantaged, but thanks to the hard work of Anthony and the school's teachers and staff, they are beating the odds.

Among other best practices, Anthony cites the importance of teachers' relationships with students.

"Research says if we want to 'take it to the next level,' you have to have relationships with students if you want rigor and relevance. Relationships make that possible," Johnson said. "If a student knows you care and you're invested in making them successful, they will stretch themselves to the next level."

Education Pioneers has partnered with Acumen Solutions for their 3rd Annual Race for a Cause on Sunday, October 16, 2011 in Arlington, VA.

Education Pioneers is 1 of 10 non-profits competing for a cash prize. In addition to proceeds from registration fees, our number of registrations determines whether we will receive a sizeable matching gift. We are only 42 registrations away from a strong finish in the top 3. The non-profit organization who has the most registrations wins the most money, and you can help us get there!

You can help support Education Pioneers in one of three ways for just $25-$30:

1)      Sign up to run:

There's a 1-mile fun run and an 8K option for adults, as well as a fun run for kids.

2)      Race in spirit (no attendance required):

Sign up for either of the above races as a simple donation, and "race in spirit" to support our cause.

3)      Register a friend, and share this opportunity to support us with others in your network.

Use Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, and/or email to encourage others to support our work.

Register Today To Support Education Pioneers in the Race for a Cause. Make sure you select Education Pioneers as your charity, and let the DC Metro Area team know if you plan to attend the event.

In this article featured on Seton Hall Law's website, Audrey Day Bordeaux, a 2011 Graduate School Fellow in Los Angeles, talks about her summer experience and the value of an Education Pioneers Fellowship.

In Audrey's words: "I chose to apply for Education Pioneers because the opportunity represented the first time since coming to law school that I would have the chance to be on the ground, marrying my legal research skills and background in public education. The professional development workshops and opportunities to establish a broad network of individuals similarly passionate about education reform convinced me that Education Pioneers was absolutely the way I had to spend my summer. I was certain the experiences over this summer would be life and career changing. They have proven to be so," says Bordeaux.
