Education Pioneers Opens Admissions for 2012 Fellowships
Top Professionals Sought by National Nonprofit to Help Accelerate Excellence in Education
Oakland, CA - Education Pioneers, a national nonprofit dedicated to attracting and developing more talented leaders for important roles outside of the classroom to support teachers and drive student success, announced today it has opened admissions for its 2012 Graduate School and Analyst Fellowships.
The 10-week, summer Graduate School Fellowship and the 10-month Analyst Fellowship are leadership development programs that were created to provide our nation's best and brightest emerging leaders with entry into rewarding careers in education leadership, and to ensure that school districts, charter school organizations and education nonprofits have the human capital necessary to accelerate excellence in public education.
The Graduate School Fellowship - Education Pioneers' flagship initiative - provides top graduate students from business, law, policy, and education with 10 weeks of high-impact consulting work with education organizations. The Analyst Fellowship, created to meet the demand for more data expertise in education, places early-career professionals with analytic experience into education organizations for 10 months to manage important data projects. Both Fellowships also provide structured professional development workshops, connection to industry leaders and experts, and support to help Fellows launch education leadership careers across the sector.
"At Education Pioneers, we believe that K-12 public schools can provide a world-class education to all children, and that teachers need effective systems and support for their important work," said Scott Morgan, founder and CEO of Education Pioneers. "We are committed to finding the most promising professionals who are devoted to helping scale success across the entire system of public education."
Education Pioneers Fellows' knowledge and experience includes strategy, finance, operations, data analysis, marketing, human resources, curriculum design, policy analysis, and law. Fellows bring their unique skill sets to more than 130 education organizations nationwide through the Fellowships. In 10 weeks or 10 months, Education Pioneers Fellows help implement or advance important initiatives outside of the classroom that directly support teaching and learning success inside of the classroom. Fellows also work alongside industry experts and cohort peers, and learn about key education challenges to deepen their understanding of the complexities of K-12 public education. Beyond their Fellowships, nearly 70% percent of Education Pioneers Alumni have chosen to continue in full-time leadership positions in the education sector.
In 2012, Education Pioneers expects to select and place 335 Graduate School Fellows and 60 Analyst Fellows with more than 130 education organizations nationwide, such as Chicago Public Schools, the New York City Department of Education, NewSchools Venture Fund, and KIPP, doubling the number of Analyst Fellows from 2011.
In 2011, Education Pioneers expanded the Analyst Fellowship from the pilot location of the San Francisco Bay Area to the east coast, launching an inaugural cohort of 10 Fellows in Boston. Current Boston Fellows are working in organizations that span the education landscape, including Boston Public Schools, The Achievement Network and Bellwether Education Partners. Boston Fellows hail from top private-sector companies including PriceWaterhouseCoopers, JP Morgan, and Oliver Wyman, and from top undergraduate institutions including Brown University, Princeton University and Tufts University. Moreover, 40% of Boston Fellows identify as African American or Latino/a.
The Fellowships' selection process is extremely competitive. In 2011, the Graduate School Fellowship had an admissions rate of 16 percent, and the Analyst Fellowship had an admissions rate of approximately five percent, with 30 Fellows chosen from over 600 applicants. Candidates hail from top academic programs in business, policy, law, and education at our nation's best universities, including Harvard, Stanford, University of Chicago, and University of Texas at Austin, and from employers such as Google, McKinsey, and Teach For America. Education Pioneers maintains a strong commitment to diversity, and actively recruits people of color for the Fellowships; in 2011, approximately 50 percent of Fellows identified as people of color.
To encourage more talented emerging leaders to apply to the Fellowships, Education Pioneers will host recruitment events on more than 100 university campuses nationwide in the fall. Additionally, Education Pioneers will recruit at events such as the National Black MBA Association Annual Conference in Atlanta, and the National Society of Hispanic MBAs Conference in Anaheim, and the Net Impact Conference in Portland, Oregon. For Partner organizations, the Fellowships provide an opportunity to secure high-caliber talent during focused timeframes, and to access Education Pioneers' robust, nationwide network of more than 1,200 alumni to fill permanent leadership positions.
Successful applicants to the Graduate School Fellowship are either current or recent graduate students with a minimum of two years of full-time professional work experience.
